A new education football league has been launched as part of the South Yorkshire United partnership, bringing together Doncaster Rovers, Barnsley FC, Rotherham United, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United to create more opportunities for students to play, develop and enjoy football.
The new league has been created with a clear focus on player development, participation and enjoyment, giving more students the opportunity to represent their college and experience the benefits of being part of a football team.
Teams from participating colleges will compete against each other in a home and away league format, providing regular opportunities to play competitive football throughout the academic year.
Importantly, the league is designed to provide a pathway for students who may be new to football, returning to the game or working towards securing a place in an established college team.
Rather than focusing solely on results, the competition aims to create an inclusive environment where students can develop their skills, build confidence, make friends and feel a strong sense of belonging.
Representing Doncaster Rovers in the new competition will be Club Doncaster Sports College’s Development Academy, with a squad of 40 students all hoping to have the opportunity to take to the field and represent Doncaster. With such a large group of students involved, the league provides an exciting opportunity for players to experience competitive football, develop their skills and enjoy being part of a team, while proudly wearing the red and white of Doncaster Rovers. For many of the students, the chance to step onto the pitch and represent their home city and club will be another highlight of their college experience.

The partnership once again brings together the strength of five professional football clubs across South Yorkshire, creating a unique opportunity to connect the region’s footballing community with further education.
The season will culminate in a celebratory Finals Day in May, bringing the participating teams and students together to recognise their achievements and celebrate the contribution they have made throughout the competition.
The day will provide an opportunity to celebrate the development, commitment and enjoyment of everyone who has taken part and showcase the positive impact of creating more inclusive opportunities in college football.
