Sports College visited by Rovers stars

By Jack Ireland7th October 2019

New students at Club Doncaster Sports College were treated to a visit from Doncaster Rovers players James Coppinger and Alfie May.

As the new academic year begins, students at the Sports College took part in a Q&A session with the Rovers stars, learning all about the day-to-day routines of being a professional sportsman.

Coppinger, who is in his sixteenth season at the club, highlighted some of the best moments in his illustrious career to the students, including his time spent under the managerial teachings of the late Sir Bobby Robson at Newcastle United.

The Guisborough-born footballer, who opened up to the College students about growing up as a footballer, spoke in lengths about working hard. He said:

ā€œYou have to work hard to achieve what you set out to achieve.

ā€œI also think belief is massive. Whatever it is that you do, whether it’s playing football or doing a degree, you have to believe you can achieve it.ā€

Coppinger, along with Alfie May, have been chosen as the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) ambassadors for Club Doncaster Foundation in 2019/20, as they step up their involvement in community projects.

Striker May, who named Michael Owen as his footballing inspiration growing up, was thankful to the PFA for the support they give to footballers for life after football.

A former builder, May has expressed a desire to go into coaching once he retires, with the PFA offering the opportunities for him to gain his coaching qualifications.

He said:

ā€œI want to go into coaching eventually, and the PFA helps massively in helping you make a career after football.ā€

The players, who will be working closely with the College throughout 2019/20, have seen their performances for Rovers take the South Yorkshire club to seventh in the table, chasing the top six.

Coppinger was quick to play down the start Rovers have made, as they look to build on last seasons’ success. He said:

ā€œThe transition under Darren (Moore) has been really good.

ā€œWe’ve done really well so far but we’re not getting carried away. There is still a lot of work to do.ā€

Club Doncaster Sports College celebrates its tenth birthday

By Jack Ireland10th July 2019

From humble beginnings to record setting in a decade, the sports college is providing great opportunities for local youth.

Club Doncaster Sports College, based at the Eco-Power Stadium, home of Doncaster Rovers FC and the Doncaster RLFC, has helped hundreds of youngsters in the community kickstart their careers since it opened in 2008.

Its unique curriculum has been designed to give learners the opportunity to develop their employability within sport, health, and fitness.

Principal Adi Turnpenny said: ā€œWe are a sports college based at the Eco-Power Stadium, we run sports courses for 16-18-year-olds at level two and three.

ā€œWe also run degree programmes where you can study for a degree right here at the Eco-Power Stadium.ā€

The college started very small with just one classroom in the stadium, however, now ten years on it now has 170 students.

Mr Turnpenny added: ā€œWe’re having a really positive impact on the young people of Doncaster, we’re helping them into jobs in the sports industry.ā€

ā€œWe’re not necessarily looking for the next Christiano Renaldo. We’re looking for the next PE teachers, physiotherapists, and gym instructors.ā€

The students go onto a wide variety of careers after their education. Many are employed by the Eco-Power Stadium themselves but others venture further afield.

One student is now a lecturer in American university Penn State.

ā€œWe’re offering great pathways for the young people of Doncaster,ā€ said Mr Turnpenny.

The nationally recognised qualifications taught at the college have seen pass rates of 99.1 per cent and achievement rates of 92.6 per cent for academic year 17/18.

Impressive statistics include a 14.5 per cent above the national average in BTEC Diploma in Sport and a 9.1 per cent above the national average in BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport.

Founder of the college and current business development manager Jenna Scully said: ā€œI am extremely proud of the college and all that our team has achieved over the last decade.

ā€œFrom humble beginnings with a small cohort of just 15 learners taught in a spare room at the stadium, it is remarkable to see where we are now with over 170 learners studying in our impressive college facilities at the Eco-Power Stadium

ā€œI’m sure our students and staff would all agree, the college really is a wonderful place to study and to work!ā€

Ben Howe, aged 18, from Kirksandall, is studying a BTEC level 3 extended diploma in sport and is planning at staying at the college and pursuing a degree alongside his passion for sport.

ā€œThe sports college has allowed me to take my rugby to the next level, I was given a chance to play with the Dons and now I’ve signed a contract with Castleford Tigers,ā€ he said.

ā€œI have a lot to thank the college for, it’s a really friendly environment.ā€

Chaneice Howson, 18, from Worksop, who is studying a BTEC level 3 extended diploma in sport said: ā€œI’m currently a part of the women’s football team and it’s a great team to be a part of because all of the girls get along really well and we build each other’s confidence up.

ā€œBeing able to be in this facility in Doncaster has really made me be more aware of what I want to do in the future.

ā€œThe college here has helped me pursue what I want to do, and I’m hoping to take the next three years here and do my HE course.ā€

Stockport County football Szymon Czubik, who studied at the college, said: ā€œMy time at Club Doncaster Sport College was amazing.

ā€œI gained lots of experience and skills during my two-year course.

ā€œThe college was professional yet fun, which made making friends easy. I’m still in touch with players and staff members who always helped me out. It’s a brilliant place to study and play. ā€œ
