Club Doncaster Sports College students were joined by SEED ambassador and former Emmerdale actress Gemma Oaten for an informative talk on the dangers of eating disorders this afternoon.

It’s part of a regional tour organised by SEED support services who work to help people who are living with eating disorders.

The actress, best known for her role in Emmerdale, is visiting a series of schools and colleges where she’ll be using SEED’s educational toolkit to help support the delivery of eating disorder awareness training.

Gemma said: “Early intervention and education is absolutely paramount when it comes to eating disorder awareness and support.

“It’s wonderful to see the conversation continuing and hopefully we can help more kids.

“As we know there’s a growing increase in those developing eating orders at the moment, especially due to the pandemic, so it’s vital we start being open and encouraging people to understand and educate themselves about eating disorders and also feel like they’re not alone and that they can talk.”

The SEED educational toolkit helps teachers and group leaders to talk confidently about eating disorders, wellbeing and body image.

“Gemma’s story was really thought provoking and engaging”, explained Sports College head of further education Emma Harrison.

“It’s so important that our learners have the knowledge and understanding of eating disorders, and know where to access support either for themselves or to provide a support framework for peers, family and friends.

“We’d like to thank Gemma for joining us here at the Eco-Power Stadium and for engaging the students.”

Adam Morrison, a student at the College, said: “Gemma’s talk was very insightful and it has given me the tools to recognise the signs of somebody struggling with an eating disorder.

“I’m now much more confident that I could support a friend or family member who was contending with such an issue”.

Chloe speaks passionately about her struggles with mental health, her journey from Yorkshire to America as well as her activities as a mental health advocate.

“Chloe delivered a fascinating call from start to finish”, explained Foundation sport development officer Kelly Jackson-Powell.

“Talking about our mental health and the way we are feeling is as important as ever, and time to talk day does a great job of bringing our attention back to the way we’re feeling.

“We’d like to thank Chloe for taking the time out to deliver the talk to our participants and students who were hooked from start to finish.”

Sports Recruiting USA, who helped Chloe on her journey to America, will go on to support a handful of College students who have aspirations to study in America.

Staff have worked hard to produce a mixture of live lessons, facilitated study and engaging content for students throughout the start of the spring term.

Club Doncaster Sports College Students celebrated the magic of the FA Cup as they successfully travelled from the Eco-Power Stadium to the London Stadium by foot in just seven days.

The virtual FA Cup Run challenge was launched as the Rovers squad prepared for their visit to the London Stadium to face West Ham United in the fourth round of the competition last Saturday.

Students and staff helped complete the challenge by running and walking the equivalent distance of 163 miles from the Eco-Power Stadium, all the way to the London Stadium.

Participants submitted the distances that they covered which were then tallied up into the Sports College grand total.

“There was a lot of enthusiasm in our virtual lessons on the Monday after the Blackburn victory, the students were very keen to see if Rovers could draw a big name and so it transpired when we were drawn away to West Ham United”, explained College deputy principal Ben Thompson.

“It was bittersweet for many as the tie presented an opportunity to visit the magnificent London Stadium and face West Ham, who are doing very well in the Premier League.

“As staff, we decided that we’d launch the FA Cup Run, an opportunity to encourage learners to get their steps in, whilst achieving the goal of traveling 163 miles to East London. The learners really took to the challenge and the irony was that for at least 2 days of the challenge we had heavy snow, making the feat to reach London by the Friday, all the more commendable”.

Club Doncaster Sports College students have been treated to a virtual cooking masterclass from Mike Beaton, the Commando Chef from the Royal Marines Educational Awareness Team.

Mike delivered an engaging and educational hour-long session to students, in which he taught them how to fuel their performance with his famous ‘Chicken Curry in a Hurry’.

The session also looked at healthy eating and cooking options, as well as his pathway into the marines, career advice and even tested the learners with a quiz as he cooked.

Royal Marines EAT has travelled the length of Britain and this was Mike’s second time with the CDSC students, engaging them through the subject of food and using it as a platform to enthuse, inspire and educate young people, encouraging them to think about their next step in life.

Active IQ Tutor William Biggs said: “The link with Mike has been excellent for our learners and the college. Mike brings knowledge, skill and enthusiasm in abundance and he had over 30 students hooked for a full hour in the virtual session.

“At the Sports College, we’re passionate about progression from our courses and our Year 13 students get a real insight into opportunities in the Royal Marines and Mike offers some very pragmatic advice about the sports industry in general.

“On behalf of the college, I’d like to thank Mike and Royal Marines EAT for another fantastic session”.

The magic of the FA Cup has gripped staff and students alike at Club Doncaster Sports College, who’ve planned to make the trip from Doncaster Rovers’ to the capital by foot as part of their ‘FA Cup Run’ challenge.

Students and staff will attempt to make the trip by running and walking the equivalent distance of 163 miles from the Eco-Power Stadium, all the way to the London Stadium, home of West Ham United, before the fourth-round tie between Rovers and West Ham on Saturday, 23 January.

Participants will be asked to submit distances that they’ve covered, whether it be from running or walking, which will then be tallied up into the Sports College grand total.

Ben Thompson, Deputy Principal at Club Doncaster Sports College, has praised the initiative during difficult times.

He said: “This is an exciting initiative which staff and students alike cannot wait to get involved in.

“As a college, we’ve got such a special relationship with the football club, so it seemed fitting to acknowledge the achievements of the Rovers thus far in the FA Cup by making the trip, albeit virtually; a trip that many of our students and staff would have been making on 4th Round weekend.

“We’re inviting all Club Doncaster Sports College learners to get involved and bank their miles so we can reach the magnificent London Stadium before the game kicks off in just over a weeks time”.

The class ‘Bubbles’ working together to achieve the collective goals will be rewarded for covering long distances or completing noteworthy achievements as part of the FA Cup run.

The FA Cup RUN will commence on the 14th January, with regular updates throughout the week on the Sports College Facebook and Twitter pages.

Former CDSC student and Foundation Community Coach Josh Bucknall has won the Foundation’s PL Kicks award during the Premier League Charitable Fund 10 year anniversary celebrations following his fantastic work in the community.

Josh began his journey with PL Kicks as a participant, regularly attending sessions at Edlington before going on to study at Club Doncaster Sports College.

Upon graduating from the College, Josh joined the Foundation as an apprentice coach, where he supported the Kicks sessions that he once attended.

Now a full-time coach, Josh leads our Kicks community sessions across the region.

“My journey started at Kicks then went to Club Doncaster Sports College, after that, I gained an apprenticeship, and I am now a full time Community Coach”, explained Josh.

“Club Doncaster Foundation has supposed me in many ways to help me have a career in sport. I love what I do for a living.”

Mark Cooper, Sport Development Officer at the Foundation, added: “I’ve seen Josh go from a Kicks participant to a full time community coach.

“It really is a great example of the work that the projects do in the community, and how it can go full circle.

“He’s a key member of the team and he works hard to make sure that each session is engaging and enjoyable.”

This week, the Premier League Charitable Fund is celebrating 10 years of making a difference and helping communities thrive.

Club Doncaster Sports College student and Dons Rugby player Ben Howe revealed that there’s ‘no better place to look’ than Club Doncaster Sports College in a recent interview with College Deputy Principal Ben Thompson.

Howe, who studied at the college for two years and captained the Rugby League academy before moving onto the College’s degree programme, has just signed his second pro deal with the Dons following an impressive try against Wakefield and his exemplary attitude in training.

“The College’s link with the dons gave me the opportunity and I was lucky enough to get a contract out of it”, Howe explained.

“It’s such a good environment to learn in, if you want a career in sport, there’s no better place to look. If you’re going to go down the A-level route it’s hard to specialise, but if you come here, it’s sport and sport only.

“If you know that’s what you want to do there’s no better place to come and do it. It’s specialist, its sport and its practical, you cover it all. The teachers are focussed and you want to learn, it would be a no brainer.”

Ben also discussed his excitement for the Rugby League World Cup 2021, which is coming to Doncaster this time next year.

“It’s huge for not only the country but for Doncaster, to have three games at the Eco-Power Stadium is a massive opportunity to push the sport in the area.

“In terms of the tournament, you’ve got your big teams, England, Australia, New Zealand, so it’s hard to predict. It’s going to be a good tournament. Hopefully by then we’ll have fans through the door.”
