Sports College students battle wintry conditions to complete 163 mile trip to London Stadium by foot in just one week

By Tom Hammersley26th January 2021

Club Doncaster Sports College Students celebrated the magic of the FA Cup as they successfully travelled from the Eco-Power Stadium to the London Stadium by foot in just seven days.

The virtual FA Cup Run challenge was launched as the Rovers squad prepared for their visit to the London Stadium to face West Ham United in the fourth round of the competition last Saturday.

Students and staff helped complete the challenge by running and walking the equivalent distance of 163 miles from the Eco-Power Stadium, all the way to the London Stadium.

Participants submitted the distances that they covered which were then tallied up into the Sports College grand total.

“There was a lot of enthusiasm in our virtual lessons on the Monday after the Blackburn victory, the students were very keen to see if Rovers could draw a big name and so it transpired when we were drawn away to West Ham United”, explained College deputy principal Ben Thompson.

“It was bittersweet for many as the tie presented an opportunity to visit the magnificent London Stadium and face West Ham, who are doing very well in the Premier League.

“As staff, we decided that we’d launch the FA Cup Run, an opportunity to encourage learners to get their steps in, whilst achieving the goal of traveling 163 miles to East London. The learners really took to the challenge and the irony was that for at least 2 days of the challenge we had heavy snow, making the feat to reach London by the Friday, all the more commendable”.

Sports College students treated to virtual cooking masterclass by Royal Marines Commando Chef Mike Beaton

By Tom Hammersley20th January 2021

Club Doncaster Sports College students have been treated to a virtual cooking masterclass from Mike Beaton, the Commando Chef from the Royal Marines Educational Awareness Team.

Mike delivered an engaging and educational hour-long session to students, in which he taught them how to fuel their performance with his famous ‘Chicken Curry in a Hurry’.

The session also looked at healthy eating and cooking options, as well as his pathway into the marines, career advice and even tested the learners with a quiz as he cooked.

Royal Marines EAT has travelled the length of Britain and this was Mike’s second time with the CDSC students, engaging them through the subject of food and using it as a platform to enthuse, inspire and educate young people, encouraging them to think about their next step in life.

Active IQ Tutor William Biggs said: “The link with Mike has been excellent for our learners and the college. Mike brings knowledge, skill and enthusiasm in abundance and he had over 30 students hooked for a full hour in the virtual session.

“At the Sports College, we’re passionate about progression from our courses and our Year 13 students get a real insight into opportunities in the Royal Marines and Mike offers some very pragmatic advice about the sports industry in general.

“On behalf of the college, I’d like to thank Mike and Royal Marines EAT for another fantastic session”.

Sports College Students to travel from Eco-Power Stadium to London Stadium by foot in virtual ‘FA Cup Run’ challenge

By Tom Hammersley14th January 2021

The magic of the FA Cup has gripped staff and students alike at Club Doncaster Sports College, who’ve planned to make the trip from Doncaster Rovers’ to the capital by foot as part of their ‘FA Cup Run’ challenge.

Students and staff will attempt to make the trip by running and walking the equivalent distance of 163 miles from the Eco-Power Stadium, all the way to the London Stadium, home of West Ham United, before the fourth-round tie between Rovers and West Ham on Saturday, 23 January.

Participants will be asked to submit distances that they’ve covered, whether it be from running or walking, which will then be tallied up into the Sports College grand total.

Ben Thompson, Deputy Principal at Club Doncaster Sports College, has praised the initiative during difficult times.

He said: “This is an exciting initiative which staff and students alike cannot wait to get involved in.

“As a college, we’ve got such a special relationship with the football club, so it seemed fitting to acknowledge the achievements of the Rovers thus far in the FA Cup by making the trip, albeit virtually; a trip that many of our students and staff would have been making on 4th Round weekend.

“We’re inviting all Club Doncaster Sports College learners to get involved and bank their miles so we can reach the magnificent London Stadium before the game kicks off in just over a weeks time”.

The class ‘Bubbles’ working together to achieve the collective goals will be rewarded for covering long distances or completing noteworthy achievements as part of the FA Cup run.

The FA Cup RUN will commence on the 14th January, with regular updates throughout the week on the Sports College Facebook and Twitter pages.
